Galeon Andalucia
Просмотров 5172 месяца назад
A replica of a Spanish galleon called in at ports down the east coast of Britain in the summer of 2024, before sailing to Portugal. Built in 2009 it is now a floating museum celebrating the role played by merchant galleons in Spain's maritime history. This film was made when it spent a few days docked on the River Tyne at Newcastle. It's other North East stop offs included Blyth, Whitby and Sca...

The Other Northumberland

Around 55 years ago I made a cine film to show there were two Northumberlands, one with beautiful beaches, coal mines and shipyards, and another that people rarely saw. This is the Northumberland below the waves of the North Sea and it has its own beauty with kelp forests, colourful sea creatures and rusting wrecks. Here it is

Sea Hare
Просмотров 30Год назад
This is an Anaspidea, otherwise known as a Sea Hare. It hides in plain sight by being almost indistinguishable from a strand of kelp seaweed. It has the same shape, colour and gentle movements of kelp in a current and the only reason I spotted this one among the rest of the seaweed in a rockpool at Newbiggin in Northumberland is that it was moving when there was no current and the other seaweed...
Cresswell Pele Tower and Garden
Просмотров 103Год назад
An ancient and dilapidated pele tower at Cresswell in Northumberland was restored in 2021 and opened (at selected times) to the public. Five years earlier an archaelogical dig was carried out whidh uncovered more of the history of the land around the tower. This video shows both, and includes footage of the tower's walled garden which was also being restored at the time.

Newbiggin Reborn

A breakwater and new beach was created for Newbiggin Bay on the Northumberland coast in 2007. When the work was completed a statue was installed on a platform over the breakwater. This is a glimpse of the work that went into that project
My.Dad was an Alcan man after the army... any Alcan footage?...
Great memories for me, only lived a few years in the town but was a regular visitor for nearly 50 years to see grandparents who lived on 7th Row. Ive yet to find better ice cream than Pieronis anywhere. They were husband and wife, she was called Norma. According to my nan the recipe was never revealed! Maybe just folklore.....
Wonderful . You took me home for a moment . Thank you .
I am transported home in a moment .
H&H motorcycles! Used to get my motorbike badges from there, brilliant memories
God has been trying to get rid of Newbiggin for many years. Its called deleting your errors..
Amazing interesting footage. I personally would have preferred it without the music so you could hear all the sounds, but that’s just me. It’s heartbreaking we have lost this industry. Thanks for sharing ❤
Closed our own pits to import coal was a crime a great industry gone . 🇬🇧⚒️
Really good video and good footage. It looked a clean mine compared to some. Thanks for sharing.
My cousin Jimmy Wakenshaw worked there till it closed thanks to Thatcher.
I loved going to my Aunties In the 50s and 60s been sent to Pieroni's with a large jug for some of the best ice cream ever . it's not the same now. I really miss Pieroni's .
Should be still going
An honorary Irishman ❤
Strange to see The Northern Rock has shut down. Some things never changed.
Looks sad. Cheers from Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Country... what's left of it anyways.
great to see, went down a few times on mines rescue training
Nice. Those lower levels flooded would you say?
The miners were the best bunch of men I ever worked with
I agree.......I miss working downstairs.........most the mines I worked are all closed now
Cheers for this.
Outstanding insight, massively appreciated Vince, cheers bonny lad

Lovely tribute and a really good looking statue. Thanks for documenting.
This was the first coal mine where the MINERS all turned into millionairs. Pray to God that that will finally happen. Wanna bet? Poor as hell miners, living only fourty years and dying of coal dust. And mine owners who loved golfing and being an arrogant Member of Parliament. Jesus, hep this stupid world.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT, PURE FOOTAGE, NO MUSIC... STARTED DIVING MID 80'S, BROUGHT UP AT SEAGULL ROCK, CATHEDRAL ROCK, ST. LOVE ALL THE FOOTAGE TAKES ME BACK, STILL DIVING KNOW, BEEN ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT STILL LOVE DIVING THE NORTH EAST COAST... BUT NEVER A WET SUIT, I TIP MY HAT TO YOU AND YOUR FELLOW DIVERS, HARD AS NAILS 🤣🤣... ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT VIDEO, THANK YOU SO MUCH, STAY SAFE
Very cheap movement made from stamped metal, Not worth fixing-put a $5 quartz movement in if you want to use it
Very good !!! ( Brazil )
This would have been better with narration.
Should have been a 4 leaf shamrock. RIP wor Jack!
Miss Newbiggin
Its a regular thing.
Newbiggin, tremendous for everything from fishing to golf, high street has everything you could possibly need from a meal deal or a pint to kebab and everything in between.
I used to work at 29 Station Road at the TSB Barnk in the 60s .
Really good video, interesting to see the beach being restored.
My dad was on this train, he passed away now but, great memories.
Statue looks like Andy Capp & Flo. Top art critic Jonathan Jones branded the sculpture an “ Eye Wounding Erection”
Grew up in Newbiggin in the 60s and 70s live the other side of the world a long way from the ocean
That's why I put this up here, so that you and others in your situation can be reminded of your roots.
From what I’ve heard this reopened freight line is going to be a Newcastle-Ashington service. Fine; but would it not be so much better to continue it to Morpeth and back to Newcastle as a circular? Why is it everything that’s done to reopen old and disused lines always seems to fall short somewhere?!
The track does not exist for it to be a circular journey. When the Blyth and Tyne service reaches Bedlington Station the track splits and from there trains can go either to Morpeth or Ashington, but a circular journey with trains calling at Ashington and Morpeth isn't possible.
@@vincentgledhill I think you’ll find it is. I did it on a railtour in 1994; past the old Butterwell pit. Just relay any missing track if it’s been stolen.
Worked in that EC branch office at the start of a 47 career working for NCJ . did you work for NCJ as a reporter ? Your name rings a bell 🔔
Hi Bob. Yes, I worked at that branch from 1965 until NCJ shut it and moved the branch to Morpeth in the 1980s. Which year were you there?
@@vincentgledhill Early seventies l think George Wright was branch manager , l remember l had just passed my test and they had a Morris Minor van ! Also worked at Morpeth Branch in the Sanderson Arcade ?
@@bobatwell7505 I remember big George well. I worked at the Sanderson Arcade office as well, but only briefly in 1965 and Frank Carr was the circulation manager then. Have you been back to the old office since it was turned into the Hop 77 micro pub?
@@vincentgledhill I haven't no , living in Killingworth, so not often in Morpeth . Will have to visit..🍺🍺. They eventually closed all the branch offices so transferred into the Transport Dept in 1981 . Remained there until 2011 when l retired .
@@bobatwell7505 I retired in 2009 after 44 years. By the way, were you in the Thomson pension which was taken over by the Pension Insurance Company and have you been to any of the lunches they hold every year?
Loved newbiggin when we were kids every time we visit the north east from the midlands as well as this year January 2023 it feels great. Many a time we had a trip there.
I think they should also erect a Statue of JC at GAA headquarters Croke Park,Dublin..He put Irish football on the map👍☘️ it would be well deserved recognition!
They also have a nice one of Jack at Cork Airport, Jerry.
@@vincentgledhill I didn't realize that!..And in this day of instant Celebrity addiction (it's like ur purchasing some kind of new cereal at the Grocery store!) Jack Charlton was extremely well known for all the right reasons!..And he had so many top qualities it's hard to put u finger on one in particular, but his 'down to earth' honest persona stands out for me&as I said he gave the Irish ☘️ people something to be proud of in the field of Sport!(especially on a International level)
@@jerryoshea3116 I'm from Jack's home town and went to school with his youngest brother, Tommy. I also ghost wrote his mother Cissie's autobiography, so I knew him well and, take it from me, he was every bit as genuine as he appeared to be. He also loved being an adopted Irishman
@@vincentgledhill Wow that's amazing &I'm honoured👍..And I just watched that 1971 Tyne Tees Docum..It was great to see the county back then& him mixing with the people he grew up(Geordie's always so friendly and grounded from my experience!) with,&his family,it really was a excellent piece of work there&in todays media obsessed world he was a Producers dream,( and nightmare because he was obsessed with being honest& straightforward)And this is why he was so appreciated and respected! And his family really were such high achievers to say the least, and of course his Brother Bobby also being a football Legend! And as for me being born in London to Irish Parents,Jack did so much to give the people of Ireland something to rejoice,&and the sudden rise of the football team(who were seen as a easy mark up until his arrival on the scene !) Was phenomenal!..Yes they don't make them like him anymore!
@@jerryoshea3116 In his later years Jack liked nothing better than walking along the prom in the seaside town of Newbiggin, which is next to Ashington, where he was born. While his wife had her hair done by a hairdresser who was also an old friend, Jack would walk along the prom chatting to anyone he met. Eventually he would end up at Newbiggin golf club where he would have a coffee with an old friend who had been in his class at school. Jack never forgot his roots.
statue nowt to do with fishing and mining sorry but only thimg missing is the pitbull dog great video though well done
Great editing.
Thanks Simon.
Incredible watching this almost 15 years on as funding for the line has been approved and construction has long since begun.
I remember my Dad telling us kids about the pioneer shoe repair man calling in the street.
Why are those people looking into Pieroni's shop window so interested? I like eating ice-cream, not staring at it.
Pieronis' window was full of cards from people with stuff to sell. A pre-computer age version of ebay.
@@vincentgledhill Interesting, thanks for that.
It has been drained again in 2022 ...
I recall pieronis ice cream shop, all the cards in the window, folk selling stuff, got my ear pierced at Kents, while getting a perm.
Interesting I dont realy know Ashington, but there is something about looking at old pictures of places.
That was a flood of memories for me. I can't believe my mouth watered as soon as I saw Pieroni. The best ice cream around by far at that time.
My office was straight across the road from Pieroni's, so you can guess what was usually on our lunchtime menu.
@@vincentgledhill lucky you! 🙂
I remember the left hand window was full of ads, I used to spend ages looking through them all.
I definitely agree.
A thoughtful and important presentation. Well done!
Thanks for that.
I am told my relative Fred Clark made footballer Jackie Milburn's boots. Would be most grateful if anyone knows where his shop or premises were in Ashington. Thanks
Fred Clark had his shop on Millburn Road. It was a wool shop that also sold shoes. I haven't heard the Jackie Millburn tale before. The shoe shop on this part of Station Road was Clive's, which did sell a brand called the Clarks shoes.
